Materials List

  • Aleene's® Fabric Fusion® Permanent Dry Cleanable Fabric Adhesive

  • Miscellaneous

    •   Sewing machine
    •   Sewing needle
    •   Thread
    •   Pillow form, 16” x 16”
    •   Felt: fuchsia, yellow, turquoise, white, black
    •   Straight pins
    •   Scissors
    •   T-shirt, adult large, lime
    •   Paper towels
    •   Fuzzy yarn, lime
    •   Wax paper

    Instructions

  • Lay strips of wax paper equal to length of fabric, onto work surface. Lay fabric right side down onto wax paper.
  • Run a thin line of Fabric Fusion along hemmed edge of fabric. Press yarn into glue. Cut yarn even with end of fabric. Repeat procedure, placing lines of glue a scant ½” apart and working over armhole openings, until fabric is covered with yarn. Let dry 30 minutes. Carefully turn wax paper over. Remove wax paper. Let dry thoroughly.
  • Pin patterns onto desired color of felt. Cut out number indicated. Some pieces will be double thickness for sturdiness.
  • Lay a paper towel onto work surface. Squeeze thin lines of Fabric Fusion onto one side of a felt piece. Use finger to smooth glue to a thin, even layer, over entire piece, to edges. Press matching section into place. Smooth with fingers. Repeat procedure for all double thickness pieces. Let dry thoroughly. Trim edges if needed.
  • Cut fabric in half crosswise, creating two squares. Pin fabric right sides together. Pin pattern into place. Cut out. Remove pins.
  • Pin squares together so that lines of yarn run horizontally. Pin antenna into place at top of square, arms onto sides and feet at bottom, placing bottom of piece at cut edge of square and top of piece toward center of square.
  • Machine stitch a ½” seam around all sides.
  • Cut a 7” long slit between two strips of yarn on one side of pillow. Insert hand through slit. Carefully remove all pins holding pieces in place. Trim seams and corners. Carefully turn inside out, pushing out corners with finger.
  • Carefully insert pillow form. Enlarge slit if needed.
  • Thread needle with double strand of thread. Whipstitch opening closed.
  • Arrange sections for eye. Glue into place. Glue eye and mouth onto pillow. Let dry.

Materials List

  • Tulip® Glitter Spray Paint

    Diamond
  • Tulip® Fabric Spray Paint™

    26563 Christmas Red
    26565 Emerald
  • Miscellaneous

    •   Permanent felt pen
    •   Sewing pins
    •   White fabric – 24” square
    •   Iron
    •   Newspaper
    •   Blow dryer – optional
    •   Safety pin
    •   Self-adhesive shelf paper
    •   Sewing machine with matching thread
    •   Ribbon – 2 yards per pillow
    •   Ruler
    •   Paper towels
    •   Sewing needle
    •   Coordinating fabric – 24” square
    •   Scissors
  • Patterns

    Instructions

    1. Cut out star pattern. Place on shiny side of shelf paper and use felt pen to trace around. Draw desired number of stars. To create dots, trace around a quarter and draw desired number of dots.
    2. Measure and cut white fabric into a 20” square. Cover work surface with newspaper then place fabric in center.
    3. Peel paper backing from circles or stars and randomly place on fabric. Run a fingernail around edges of shelf paper to prevent seepage.
    4. Test desired color of Fabric Spray Paint on paper towel. Holding bottle about 12” from surface, spray an even coat onto fabric. Let dry – a blow dryer will speed this step. Spray on another coat for more intense color. Let dry then carefully peel off shelf paper designs.
    5. Spray with a heavy coat of Diamond Glitter spray and let dry.
    6. To create white strip, measure and cut a 15” wide by 20” long strip of white fabric. Iron fabric into thirds lengthwise. Open up and place on newspaper.
    7. Use felt pen to trace desired word onto shelf paper. To create stencil, use sharp scissors to carefully cut out inside of each letter leaving edges intact. Peel off paper backing then position in center on strip. Press firmly along inside cut edges. Cover remainder of fabric with paper towels to protect from overspray.
    8. Spray three light coats within word letting dry between each coat. Remove stencil.
    9. Fold into thirds, and then sew a double stitch along both edges.
    10. Measure and cut pillow top and backing fabric to desired size. Center and pin white strip onto top of pillow then pin to backing fabric with right sides together. Sew around edges. Trim seams and clip corners.
    11. Use scissors to carefully cut an 8” wide slit about 5” up from bottom seam on back of pillow. Turn pillow inside out and iron smooth. Insert pillow form or polyfil then use needle and thread to sew opening closed.
    12. Cut a 12” length of ribbon. Loop remaining ribbon into bow then tie strip around center. Trim ends then use safety pin to attach at top of pillow as shown.

Love Note Pillows

IMG_3004

Before I moved from Oregon to San Diego to be near my boyfriend (my now husband) we maintained a long distance relationship. A big part of that relationship was writing letters, email and LOTS of little love notes sent back and forth. We both saved all those letters and notes and once in while we will pull them out, spend time shaking our head and laughing while reading them- so naive and silly we were! These days (insert 10 years) we still write each other notes and letters. There is just something so wonderful about a hand written note.

For a while I've wanted to do something creative with some of those notes and came up with the most simple idea to make little love note pillows.

FYI- I am OBSESSED with pillows and believe that you can never have too many around the house (they are EVERYWHERE) so adding a few more to the collection is always a good thing.

IMG_2968

I started by selecting a couple of notes and letters that I scanned.
Or they could be photographed

IMG_2977

Screen shot 2010-09-20 at 3.05.52 PM

I pulled the documents over to Photoshop and adjusted the brightness and contrast- this could really be done in any photo editing program.

Screen shot 2010-09-13 at 4.06.17 PM

I added a warming filter for a subtle sepia look.

IMG_29712

I enlarged the document so that I obscured entire sentences- for a little mystery :)

Screen shot 2010-09-13 at 4.31.06 PM

I then flipped it horizontal to prepare to print.

vb

I used Tulip's photo transfer paper and loaded it into my ink jet printer.

IMG_2978

I printed it out.

IMG_2980

I then placed the transfer face down on unbleached muslin.

IMG_2982

I covered it with a piece of scrap fabric and following the directions, ironed it down.

IMG_2983

I let the transfer cool and I peeled off the top sheet to reveal my love note.

IMG_2984

I used my craft iron to melt away any obvious edges that were showing.

IMG_2986

Next I cut it out

IMG_2987

IMG_2988

and sewed it onto the surface of another piece of muslin that I had pre cut for my pillow.

IMG_2992

I sewed the all of the sides together (with wrong sides facing).

IMG_2994

and left a hole open to so I could stuff the pillow and then sew the hole up.
