One of the many hot trends this summer besides pineapples, woven wall hangings and shibori is marbleizing. I have seen people give gorgeous marbled texture to paper galore. I thought I would try it out with clothing and fabric paint.
SUPPLIES
– Pre-washed T-shirt
– Tulip Soft Fabric Paint
– Liquid Starch
– Alum (by the spices at the grocery store)
– Disposable shirt sized container
– Bamboo skewer
I used a recipe found on the internet which was 2 cups liquid starch to 1 teaspoon alum. This was meant for use on paper, but I thought I would give it a whirl. I poured this into a disposable aluminum baking dish.
Next I added dollops of Tulip Soft Fabric Paint. Once I had enough paint I went back in with my bamboo skewer and made lines in the paint and the starch to give it a marbleized look. It looked kinda blurry, but this was a crafty experiment.
Once my paint and starch were swirly I dipped my T-shirt in. I tried to get all parts of the shirt without disturbing what I had already coated in paint.
Set your shirt aside and allow to sit for a few hours.
Next time I think I will add more paint. I love the subtlety of the marbling. The spots that did get paint look amazing and my daughter loved helping me make this shirt so that is the important part.
