2013 Status Update Drink Coasters

New Year's Eve is right around the corner, which means lots of reflection on the past year and fresh goals for the future. Today I noticed a lot of Instagram and Facebook "yearbooks" - the best of the year. I thought it would be fun to take some of our favorite status updates and turn them into something functional for New Year's parties and gatherings.  

There are several ways to go, you can put the status update on one side and let people guess who said it and then put the picture of the person on the other side to be revealed!

Here's how to make them!

New Year's Eve Champagne Glasses

Toast theNew Year in style with these easy-to-make flutes!

Supplies:
Liquid Fusion® Clear Urethane Glue 
Tulip® Glam-It-Up!™ Fashion Art Tweezers™ 
Tulip® Glam-It Up!™ PDA: Personal Dazzle Assistance™ 
Glass champagne flutes

Paper plate
Toothpick
Foil

Directions:

1. Squeeze some glue on to the foil. Use the toothpick to pick up "dots" of the glue and apply to the glass in a random fashion. Only do one segment at a time. NOTE: We are using Liquid Fusion to permanently glue the PDA crystals on the glasses. If you want them to be temporary, simply skip the gluing step.

2. Use the tweezers to pick up the gems, one at a time and apply on the dot of wet glue.

3. Continue until glass is covered - you can add as little or as much as you want. Let dry.

Wash gently by hand.

Happy New Years Place Setting

Start the New Year off right with this festive place setting.

  •   Crafter’s knife or X-acto knife
  •   Foam stamps, star designs
  •   White canvas napkins and placemats
  •   Card stock
  •   Paint pen, Silver and Gold 

  Instructions

  1. Name Card
  Cut card stock to 4-1/2” x 5” and fold in half.
  2. Tap Paint sponge into Gold Soft Paint and tap excess off on paper towel. Tap on large star of star group stamp. Repeat process using Platinum Soft Paint on small stars.
  3. Unfold card and stamp in upper left corner. The large star should be on the back part of card. Use crafter’s knife or X-acto knife to cut around top of large star to the fold.
  4. Use Silver Glitter pen to outline silver stars and Gold Glitter pen to outline gold star. For the border, use Gold Glitter pen to make a dot-dash design around card. Let dry. Write name on card.
  5. Placemat
  Iron to remove any wrinkles.
  6. Tap Platinum Soft Paint on mini swirl stamp and tap randomly around outer edge of placemat.
  7. Use Gold paint pen to draw a scalloped border about 1-1/2” around placemat.
  8. Squeeze drops of Gold and Platinum Soft Paint onto foam plate. Tap Gold on large star and Platinum on small star. Stamp in center of placemat. Repeat 5 times, forming a spray of stars. Let dry. Clean stamp between applications.
  9. Outline the gold stars with Gold Metallics dimensional paint. Let dry.
  10. For extra sparkle, spray gold Glitter Spray on placemat. Let dry.
  11. Napkin
  Iron to remove any wrinkles.

  Instructions

  1. Clean greenware. Fire to shelf cone 04.
  2. Remove dust and condition ware, using dampened sponge.
  3. Trace design with clay carbon paper and pencil on platter.
  4. Apply 3 coats of CN 221 Light Blush to all skin areas, using SB 808 No. Round. Let dry between coats.
  5. Apply 3 coats of CN 073 Dark Scarlet to one part of lady’s dress, using SB 806 No. 6 Round. Let dry between coats.
  6. Apply 3 coats of CN 253 Black to the other part of dress and hair, using SB 806 No. 6 Round. Let dry between coats.
  7. Add dots to red side of dress and outline arms neck and face with FD 254 Black. Let dry.
  8. Apply 3 coats of CN 253 Black to rim of platter, using SB 807 No. 6 Fan Glaze. Let dry between coats.
  9. Apply 2 coats of IN 1001 Clear to entire platter, using SB 806 No. 6 Fan Glaze.
  10. Let dry. Stilt and fire cone 06.

2011 Confetti Countdown Shirt

  Instructions

  1. Wash shirt without fabric softener, dry in dryer then iron smooth.
  2. Cut and lay a piece of freezer paper the length of shirt onto shirt. Use a pencil to draw wavy design down shirt referring to photo. To create stencil, carefully cut out inside design leaving outside areas intact.
  3. Position paper, shiny side down on shirt. Using medium setting on iron, iron paper in place.
  4. Cover work surface with newspaper and lay shirt in center. Cover remainder of shirt with paper towels.
  5. Test Glistening Gold fabric spray paint on paper towel. Spray an even coating within stencil. Let dry – a blow dryer will speed this step. Add another coat of spray for more intense glitter. Carefully peel off paper stencil and let dry.
  6. Enlarge patterns to desired size. Place a piece of shelf paper, shiny side up over design then use felt pen to trace pattern. Cut out centers of design to create stencil.
  7. Peel paper backing from design and position in place. Run fingernail along inside cut edges to prevent seepage.
  8. Squeeze a puddle of Glitter Bond onto foil. Dip flat end of wedge sponge into glue then swipe within stencil applying an even coating. Working in a section at a time, fill with Glitter Bond and immediately pour Gold Glitter over glue. Shake off excess glitter onto scratch paper to be reused. Repeat step, adding glitter to all sections. Carefully peel off stencils. Let dry.
  9. To create confetti, use small flat brush to paint short lines of Glitter Bond on sprayed glitter paint design. Sprinkle on Green Glitter, shake off then repeat step with Blue, Purple and Red.
  

  Miscellaneous Notes

  Press edges of shelf paper stencil firmly to avoid seepage. Use fingers to press glitter into adhesive.

Steampunk New Year's Necklace

What are you going to wear for New Year's Eve parties this year? If you're like me, you always reach for that same little black dress year after year after year. But then the jewelry changes every year according to the styles. And this year is the year of the statement necklace.

I made this amazing steampunk-style statement necklace just in time for the New Year's scene. It's much easier than it looks, and it has a famous Aleene's glue technique:

Burnt Brown Bag!

The butterfly with the houndstooth ribbon across it is truly burnt glue and a paper bag. It honestly looks like antique metal. If you've never heard of it, let me tell you about this crafty technique that's been around for years....

First, grab a paper bag from the grocery store. Cut out three 4 x 4 inch squares. Stack and glue them all together with Aleene's Tacky Glue. Trace the butterfly pattern and cut it out, and now you're ready for the craziness.

Light a candle, since the flame is part of the process. Cover the entire butterfly with glue. I'm talking a nice thick coating of glue on the top and the bottom and the edges. Yes, you're gonna get a bit sticky, but now grab some old tweezers to hold it.

Hold the glue covered butterfly over the candle and watch what happens. If you have the bag totally covered it won't catch on fire, but the glue will start to turn black and get wrinkly. I know, it's crazy! Keep going until the entire butterfly is black and wrinkled, and press out bubbles if they come up.

Then, gently rub the black soot with a tissue and let the glue dry. After that, I used my finger to rub silver rub-n-buff on it to make it look antique. A few crystals glued on the wings finished it off.

The rest of the bib necklace is a collage of trims, buttons, lace, and crystals all glued to muslin or any black scrap fabric, with Aleene's Fabric Fusion and then put together with grommets and chain.
