Avalon has another fab teen craft for you this week. She made a gorgeous Halloween pop up party invitation that is perfect for the season. Pop up cards are surprisingly easy and fun to make and this design could easily be modified for any number of holidays and special occasions. Avalon loves working with paper to make dimensional projects and this one really rocks!

With September coming to an end I thought it was time to do a Halloween craft. At my age more of us go to parties then trick or treat so I decided to create a Halloween party invitation. This is fun to make and then a few weeks later you will have even more fun at your party! Making cards is simple, enjoyable, and a great way to kick off October.


Materials
Decorative black and white scrapbook paper
Orange cardstock
Halloween themed ribbon
Martha Stewart rickety fence edge punch (or other decorative Halloween themed edge punch)
Googly eyes
Aleene’s Tacky Glue
Aleene’s Tacky Glue Stick

Craft Knife
Paper Scissors
Bone Folder

Step one: Once you have all of your materials cut your decorative scrapbook paper to 11 ¼” x53/8” inches. Fold your cut cardstock in half, the card fold is in the center of the 11 ¼” length. Make sure there is some of the decorative cardstock left over you will need it later. Use a bone folder to crease the card.

Step Two: Punch the fence from the orange cardstock. Make sure you have punched a little over 5 3/8 inches so if by accident you trim a little more paper off of your fence it won’t be a problem.

Step three: Cut the fence to fit the bottom edge of your card, attach with Aleene’s Tacky Glue stick. Any excess fence can be trimmed with your scissors.

Step four: Now get your ribbon, Aleene’s Tacky Glue, and scissors. Cut your ribbon so it won’t overlap your rickety fence, around 5 inches long. Apply it to your card by putting Aleenes tacky glue on the back then sticking on the left hand side of the card.

Step five: Take your orange cardstock and scissors. You will cut a piece of cardstock about 4 ½ inches long and 4 ¾ inches wide and then the paper about ¼ of an inch long on both sides so that you can use those flaps to attach the paper to the card


Step six: Now take the flap from and bend the ends into flaps. Bend a 1” fold and a 2.5” fold. This becomes the base for your pop up element. Use the glue stick to attach one flap on the bottom of the card and one on top so that when the card is open it makes a rectangle. See photo. Make sure when the card closes it bends with the card.

Step seven: Now take your remaining orange card stock and cut out a pumpkin to about 3 ¼”x4 ¼”. You could switch the pumpkin to a skull, spider, or black cat. This is the part where you can feel free to be creative.

Step eight: Use your craft knife to cut out a jack-o-lantern mouth with a small tooth at the top. You could also add a nose if you want to.

Step nine: Adhere the googly eyes to the pumpkin using Tacky Glue. Allow to dry.

Step ten: Using a fancy font (I used King and Queen font from dafont) write You are cordially invited... in 16 pt.. Then write the date, the address, the time span of the party and the R.S.V.P date in 8 pt.. Print. Don’t feel obligated to use black as the font color try red or maybe orange.

Step eleven: Use your paper cutter to cut out the printed material. The larger front element is 4.5”x1.25”. The invitation information is 3”x2.5”. Use the glue stick and glue the invitation into the pumpkins mouth with the tooth overlapping at an angle. Glue the pumpkin onto the front of the pop out piece of paper you glued to the card in step six, the invitation should almost rest on the bottom of the card when fully opened.

Step twelve: Apply the greeting on the front of the card with your glue stick. Glue it on an angle to give it a creepy affect.

Step thirteen: Punch a second fence element using the decorative scrapbook paper. Glue this to the inside of the card at the bottom.

ScaRY 3-D SpiDeR WeB and BloOdY NeCklacES

Our Content Editor and Brand Specialist Chloe Tatro, is modeling the slasher necklace that took about 5 minutes to make. And if you're like us,  you're looking for a fast and easy "costume" for Halloween. So, I came up with this crazy idea to create costume necklaces. You'll never believe that is only Tulip 3-Dimensional Slick Paint a.k.a. Puffy Paint.  That's all!!!

The guys in the marketing department got into it, too. Nate Hough's neck was just the right size for a bigger squeeze of Tulip 3-D Paint to come oozing out in a bloody disguise.

Here's what you need:

– Tulip 3-D Red Slick Paint

– Teflon Sheet or freezer paper

Here's what you do:

Draw a circle of paint the same size as your neck, and then draw the paint into bloody drips on the sheet. I let it dry overnight to be sure that it's good and dry. Then put it around your neck and connect the ends together. They will stick together, but if you are very active, you may want to hold it together with a safety pin.

Here's what you do:

The spider web is done the same way with Tulip 3-D Black Slick Paint. Be sure that you connect it completely together so that none of the web falls down. You know, you could also paint a web on a shirt using this idea and have a permanent spider web to wear year after year.

Handprint Halloween Bib

With my Halloween Doodle Embroidery Patterns on CRAFT and Snapsuit Costumes on PBS Parents, this past week has clearly been all about creating things for baby in celebration of Halloween. I thought today though, I'd cap-off the tike-trifecta with a project you can do with baby! Turn those pint-sized paws into haunted handprints on a keepsake bib that's totally "boo" worthy!

MATERIALS

Plain Bib (Tip: 5 pack at Ikea for under $5!)

Baby

Tulip Soft Fabric Paint (It's non-toxic, so no worries!)

Stiple Paint Brush

Crafty Chica Fabric Marker

Cardboard

Masking Tape

RicRac or Ribbon

Printable Fabric (optional)

Sewing Machine OR Fabric Fusion

How-To

• Tape bib to cardboard piece, to keep it taught.

• Strip baby down or cover him or her in a paint smock. Pour small amount of paint onto a piece of paper (freezer or wax paper works great); and place baby's hand in it. You'll have to move fast at this point and just come to peace with the fact that the prints wont be perfect. Spread baby's fingers as much as possible and press down on bib to create first ghoulie. If baby's delighted at the gooshiness of the paint, repeat for 2nd and 3rd ghoulies. If baby screams in disgust at the texture, threatening to fling paint all over your face; abandon ship. Wash baby's hand's right away with warm water and soap.

• Use fabric marker to draw ghoulie eyes and mouths.

• Print out "Drooly Ghoulie" & "2009" labels on printable fabric (or just use the fabric marker to write it directly on the bib).

• Sew or glue labels and ricrac or ribbon onto bib.

– Black fabric
– Sandpaper
– Plastic container
– Felt, 3” x 3” piece
– Painter’s tape
– Chenille Stems - white, black
– Traders Trunk
– Sheet of stiff felt - 1 sheet black
– Foam Egg - oval - 3½” x 4-7/8”
– Foam Egg - oval - 2-13/16 x 3-7/8”
– Pencil with eraser or pen

Instructions

1. COFFIN: Lightly run sandpaper over and inside trunk to remove any loose wood shavings.

2. Pour a puddle of Ebony Soft Fabric Paint™ onto foil. Using 1” Flat paintbrush, paint inside lid and sides of trunk. Let dry.

3. Cut piece of stiff black felt to fit on bottom of trunk and glue with Aleene’s® Original Tacky Glue®.

4. Pour some glue into empty container. Add water and stir until mixture reaches a milky consistency.

5. Tear pieces of white tissue paper. Working in small sections at a time, brush glue onto areas of trunk, then place pieces of tissue paper onto adhesive on trunk. As you lay the papers down, manipulate with fingers to create wrinkles and interesting textures. Continue covering the trunk sides and top in the same manner. Let dry.

6. Pour puddles of Ebony and Glacier White onto foil. Using 1” Flat paintbrush, lightly brush over the wrinkled tissue paper on trunk with a mixture of grays to give an old, worn appearance. Let dry.

7. Cut a small piece of felt, fold over a D-ring on the flat end and glue to sides of trunk. Refer to photo. Tape down until dry.

8. Trace or freehand “R.I.P.” in center of the D-rings and paint with Glacier White. Dry and outline with Dimensional Black. To trace, chalk back of pattern on reverse side, turn right side up, lay on surface and pencil over.

9. EYEBALLS: Insert toothpicks into balls and into foam base to hold upright.

10. Paint a pair of eyes with Royal Blue; mix a little Glacier White into the blue and paint the inner area. Make a dot in center with Ebony for pupil and a tiny white dot for highlight.

11. For the brown eyes, paint iris with Chocolate. Mix a little Golden Tan to paint inside leaving the chocolate rim. Add the Black pupil and dot with highlight.

12. For the green eyes, paint with Holiday Green, mix a little Golden Tan for center area and add black pupil and white highlight.

13. Make blood veins with the 3-D True Red.

14. SKELETON HEAD: Using the smaller oval shape, push two holes for eyes using the back of a pen or pencil eraser; a smaller arrow shape for the nose and lines going down for teeth.

15. SKELETON BODY: Using the larger egg shape, push tip of pencil or pen across to simulate ribs. Paint all pushed in areas with some diluted Ebony to highlight.

16. Fold a chenille stem in half, trim an inch or so on ends. Punch hole in bottom of head and top of body and insert folded pipe cleaner. Add dab of glue to where they join to secure. Let dry.

17. SKELETON ARMS AND LEGS: Use two chenille stems. Twist the two together at top; twist together a third of the way down and another third to leave ends to create fingers or toes. With remaining stems bend each a third way up and leave remainder (refer to pattern illustration). One end will wrap around to secure and the other will become the fifth toe or finger. Cut the looped ends. Insert the ends of the limbs into the body and dab glue to secure. Let dry.
18. RUNNER: Press fabric. Lightly freehand spider web with chalk (see picture). Go over lines with Tulip Dimensional Metallic Silver. Dry and wipe off chalk marks. The edges of runner can be frayed if desired.

Miscellaneous Notes

To paint eyeballs, insert toothpick in foam ball and the other end into a flat foam piece to hold in place while painting.

Stack up layers of vintage and new paper and add a printed invitation and you’re good to go! These are and fun to throw together, so making a whole bunch won’t be a problem. If you’re into upcycling his is a great way to use up your scrap paper!

1. Type out the following in 14pt. into a Word document. Center the title and left margin the info: It’s a Halloween Hootenanny!

2. Print and allow ink to dry. Cut into 4”x4” square using a paper cutter.

3. Cut a 12”x6” sheet of acid green cardstock on your paper cutter.

4. Find and mark the center point of the width of the paper. Use a bone folder to fold and crease paper so the ends meet in the center.

5. Starting at the top corner of the folded paper, center and angle a ruler to mark the tufts. This angle should be 1.5” in length. Use a dinner plate to mark a rounded space between the tufts; this is the top of the owl’s head. Cut out tufts and top of owl head.

6. Mark the bottom of the folded paper edge to edge using the plate. Cut out bottom of owl head.

7. Use Sizzix Big Shot to cut large Hello Kitty flower with vintage book paper. Use same die to cut black patterned paper into a smaller flower.

8. Cut a small dot using a hole punch with a ¾” diameter.

9. Use Fiskars punch to cut out a 1/5” circle in the orange cardstock.

10. Use glue stick to stack and layer papers, starting with the old book flower, the orange circle, the black patterned flower and the green dot. Glue flowers to the cardstock base.

11. Hand cut a 7/8”x5/8” owl beak, this is shaped like a guitar pick!

12. Adhere half of the beak to one side of the slit in the paper using Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky glue.

13. Adhere your pre-cut invitation into the center of the inside of your card.

14. Cut a triangle shaped segment of patterned paper (this will fit between the eyes at the top of your card.)

15. Trace the back of the top of the triangle so it fits the rounded head of the owl. Cut out.


16. Make a cut the triangle in half starting at the center point so it fits on each side of the card split. Adhere to card with Tacky Glue so the points meet up.
