DIY Dyed Ikat Sneakers Tutorial

If you ask me, chevron is kind of on its way out and ikat is ready to take its place as the "in" pattern. Ikat is popping up in fabric, home decor and clothes but I've yet to see any ikat shoes.

How to Make a Spiral Tie Dye Tablecloth

Spiral Tie Dye Tablecloth
Jaderbomb for iLoveToCreate
There is just something about a warm day and lounging outside. Sure, you could go buy a bright whimsical tablecloth but why do that when you can make your own. Since it's almost Summer I thought it would be a blast to make a tablecloth with tie dye. Yes even if you think this is "not" for you I promise it is. When you complete this it will make your heart feel warm and cozy.
The good thing about this crafty project is you can use it with your kids or a fancy dinner party.
So put on your gloves and let's get busy!

You will need:
*Tulip One-Step Die-Dye Kit : Vibrant (Blue, Lime & Violet)
*Tablecloth / Decorative Shower Curtain / Fabric
*Craft Brushes
*Container for Water
*Lot's of LOVE

When you tie dye a large surface like this you want to lay out a piece of visquin on the ground. Make sure you are working in a fairly large space. Trust me this will make you happy when you are moving from one end to the other.

I recommend filling each bottle to the fill line then squirting into glass containers. I only put a little in the container at a time. Next you will take a brush, lightly dip it into dye and brush it onto the spots you want to highlight on your fabric. You can absolutely do this same technique on fabric that has no design on it. I found this shower curtain at Ross and when I saw it I knew it was perfect. I wanted a piece of fabric that I could use in many different ways.
*Tablecloth
*Shower Curtain
*Curtain for your windows
Start by pinching parts of the fabric then wrapping a rubber band around it. You will get rubber bands in your tie dye kit. Since my fabric has a design on it I pinched the center of each big pattern. When you are done with the rubber bands scrunch the rest of the fabric. Grab the tie dye bottle and squeeze right on top of the rubber band. Continue adding more colors around the center, going in a spiral motion. I did not wet any of my fabric for this technique.
*Note the colors will bleed when placed next to each other.
Don't forget you can create "other" colors by following this:
*Red+Blue= Purple
*Red+Yellow=Orange
*Blue+Yellow=Green
*Yellow+Green=Lime Green
(These are just some colors you can create)
How beautiful are these tie dyed doilies! I used my left over dye to make these. Trust me they will fill your space with happiness!

What a great way to spend a warm summer afternoon. Lounging around, drinking water, eating chocolate covered coffee beans, eating strawberries all while admiring your unique tablecloth.
This tablecloth will make you smile, even if you are having a bad day. Tie Dye usually does that ya know. So what are you waiting for! Go get some and dye everything in sight!

P.S. When you start doing this you will not stop! (hehe)

Christmas Cutie Pattern Stand Up Doll

Ya, ya, ya I know I did a project using my vintage pattern girls just a few weeks ago. So sue me. She was fall themed, had a fabric dress and was in a frame. This new and improved Christmas cutie has a fresh spin on the same illustrations and it is the perfect project to kick off all the Christmas crafting you have planned.

SUPPLIES
Vintage Sewing Pattern Image
Scissors
Aleene's Quick Dry Glue
Rick Rack
Scrapbooking Paper
Foam Board
Chip Board
Collage Pauge
Tracing Paper
Pencil
Red Pen
Jolee's Scrapbooking Elements
Crafty Chica Paint White
Craft Knife
Paint Brush

Let me start by saying just because you don't have a vintage pattern book does not mean you can not play along. Pick up a vintage sewing pattern at the thrift store to use for the graphic. Choose a full length picture of a model from a magazine. Better yet have a friend take a picture of you to print out and use!

Once you have your desired image to make into a wee little stand up cut her out. Place your image on a piece of foam board, cardboard or chipboard and decoupage. I used a combination.

At some point either before or after you cut out your image trace the dress. This will give you a pattern to work with. I suggest using a fairly simple design. Also, a lesson I learned the hard way is you should cut out the hands to glue on separate. I'll explain in a minute.

After you have your pattern made from tracing paper you can place it on scrapbook paper or thin fabric to make a new and improved dress. Use a craft knife to cut out the detailed spots like between the arms and body. This is where I should have cut out her hands completely before I decoupaged her to chipboard. No worries, I just stole hands from another image. This way you don't have to do all the tedious knife work around the hands you can just stick them on top of the new outfit.

The next step after getting your dress decoupaged in place is cutting out your stand up. Leave a wide base at the bottom. This picture lies a little bit. I did cut a slit in the center, but I used a small piece of foam board instead of chipboard as the second part of the base. The foam board is thicker and helps her stand better.

Now for the fun part! Using various vintage bits and pieces, scrapbooking elements, pens and sewing notions you can gussy up your stand up. I used Aleene's Fast Dry Tacky Glue to hold everything in place.

I finished things up by painting the backside and base white with Crafty Chica paint. I used a few wrapped gifts around the base to make things extra festive.

Set your Christmas Cutie anywhere to add an extra touch of kitschy cheer. I can't wait to make a whole slew of these lovely ladies. I also see a shelf sitter version in my future! Love to know if you make your own version.

Fall Themed Polka Dots and Patterns Collage

A million and one years ago my friend Tina Sparkles made art out vintage patterns. A year or so ago I found a vintage Vogue pattern book at an antique mall and it has sat on a shelf in my studio until recently when I started thinking about Tina. I have one of her pieces of art hanging in my bathroom. The piece is a pattern from the 40's attached to a hand painted canvas and adorned with glitter. Looking at this piece and remembering my own book of patterns I had the sudden urge to create my own version in fall colors.

I gathered an assortment of collage supplies like wallpaper, Collage Pauge, fabric, picture frames, scissors and Tacky Glue. At this point I was not sure where my fall themed arty journey was going to take me.

After I chose a lovely lady to work with from the pattern book I cut her out. I then held her to a window and traced the outline of her dress onto a sheet of white paper. I cut out the paper dress and traced that onto a piece of vintage floral fabric. I cut the fabric dress out and attached it to my paper doll using Tacky Glue.

Also using Tacky Glue I attached a piece of white and orange polka dotted fabric to the backside of a picture frame. I then adhered my girl in her new dress and sealed up the frame.

I liked the idea of adding some dimension to the glass side of the picture frame as well. Using Tacky Glue and a bit of vintage plastic chain I gave this brunette beauty a smashing new necklace.

I'm thinking of making a whole series in fall themed dresses to adorn the house with this November. What do you think? I usually go straight from Halloween to Christmas, but for these collages I might make an exception.
